Understanding How Dental Insurance Works
Similarly to medical insurance, dental insurance entails paying monthly premiums in exchange for a set amount of dental care coverage in a given period (usually one calendar year). You’ll be able to access this coverage after paying a small deductible out-of-pocket.
However, whereas medical insurance is reactive, dental insurance is proactive. Instead of treating oral health problems after they’ve arisen, your insurance would prefer for you to prevent them in the first place. So, your plan is more likely to cover routine checkups than reparative services like fillings.
What Does My Dental Insurance Cover?
Each policy differs in the specifics, but most dental plans break down their levels of coverage using a framework that looks something like this:
- Preventive care (X-rays, cleanings, fluoride treatments) is usually covered at 80-100%.
- Restorative treatments (crowns, tooth extractions, dentures) tend to be covered at 50-80%.
- Cosmetic services (teeth whitening, veneers, bonding) are rarely covered at all since they don’t improve oral health.
